Sedona Red Rock High School alumnus Jacob Moore is taking his powerful arm to the east coast.

The two-time state champion shot putter and Oregon native has signed with Charleston Southern University, a small NCAA Division I baptist university in North Charleston, S.C. Moore will be the newest Buccaneer thrower on the school’s track and field team, earning himself a scholarship that will cover almost half of his tuition.

“I’m really excited, because although [Sedona Head Track and Field] Coach [Harry] Schneider is a great coach, we only got a fraction [of coaching] because we didn’t have a throwing coach,” Moore said. “I’m excited to be a part of something more organized and dedicated to throwing.”

Moore threw on par with Division I throwers at the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division III State Championship meet in May. He threw 55 feet, ½ inch in the shot put and a personal record of 160-1 in the discus, earning him state titles in both events. His personal record in the shot put, 55-11½, was thrown at the Red Rock Invitational in early April.

His consistent power throws, 3.9 cumulative grade point average and community service caught the eye of other universities such as Yale, Columbia, Louisiana Tech and Northern Arizona University. But an official visit to Charleston Southern sealed the deal for Moore.
