Kirkham siblings repeat as world champions of Cowboy Shooting1 min read

Those rootin’, tootin’, shootin’ Kirkhams are at it again.

Sedona’s Kirkham siblings — Jessica and Cody — each repeated as world champion of Cowboy Action Shooting at the 32nd annual End of Trail World Championship, which was held in Founders Ranch, N.M., in June.

Cody, competing in the Buckaroo category [13 years and under] finished in second place with a total time of 235.71 seconds, while Jessica, competing in the Junior Girls category [14 to 16 years of age] finished in first place with a total time of 245.11. The pair also finished 24th and 37th respectively in the overall standings, which includes all age groups.

“All of the top shooters in the world went to New Mexico to compete — about 500 shooters,” Jessica said.

Cowboy action shooting is a timed event where shooters move through old western “scenes” and shoot at targets with pistols, rifles and shotguns.

“They have a building with different bays, and in each bay there’s usually some props,” Jessica said. “In one there’s a saloon, and you have to go through the doors and there’s different windows, and usually you shoot from different windows that are spaced out between five and 15 feet, or maybe a fence that you have to shoot behind onto a building.
