Young Scorpions ease past Camp Verde2 min read

Having dispatched its first three opponents, each in the minimum three sets, the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions volleyball team looked to continue that streak when they traveled to Camp Verde Thursday, Sept. 12, for the first of two scheduled matches against the Cowboys this year.

The result was yet another 3-0 [25-11, 25-8, 25-18] win for a Scorpions varsity that is still in the early stages of figuring out what kind of team it can be.

“It’s basically like a brand new team because we lost seven [seniors] last year, and so most of the entire team has never been on varsity before,” said senior setter Mallory Lamparter who, as one of two returning players from last season’s state championship team along with senior Morgan Hawes, has been charged with helping organize her teammates.

“I’m supposed to keep track of rotations and everything,” Lamparter said. “So I basically make sure everyone’s where they’re supposed to be, and hitting what they’re supposed to be, because everyone is kind of unfamiliar with it.”

The Camp Verde girls kept the score close and trailed by only two, 11-9, in the early stages of the first set against the Scorpions, with setter Kayla Niederer placing perfect sets for outside hitter Allee Drake, and middle hitter Viola Logsdon.

But Lamparter, junior DeVonne Ryter and sophomore Kendall Woellmer served 14 of the next 16 points to end the first set, punctuated by a hard spike by junior Morgan Andrews at set point.

The Scorpions remained on a roll early in the second set, going up 9-0 behind the outstanding net play of Lamparter, Ryter and Hawes who combined to block three Camp Verde spikes.

A pair of kills by Ryter, who is thriving in her first season with the team, followed by a pair of aces by her, put the Scorpions ahead 16-5.
