Scorpions go to 3-1 with comeback road victory2 min read

The Sedona Red Rock High School football team pushed its season record to 3-1 with a 36-27 come-from-behind victory Friday, Sept. 20, at North Pointe Prep High School in Phoenix, and the Sedona volleyball team finished fifth in the Wolves Classic.

Sedona rolled up 258 yards of offense, with all but five of those yards coming on the ground, against the Falcons [1-3] who were coming off their first win of the season, 18-6 over Veritas Prep.

But the Scorpions began the game without five defensive starters, who were held out for disciplinary reasons, and compounded that problem by turning the ball over early in the first quarter on the own 20-yard line, giving the Falcons a short field for their first touchdown.

Junior Andre Davis, who had 88 yards and two touchdowns rushing, and another 47 yards and one touchdown on punt returns, tied the game at seven with a one-yard run.

But the Falcons scored again in the first quarter and led 14-7 before the Scorpions broke through, outscoring the Falcons  15-0 in the second quarter.

A 33-yard touchdown run by Davis tied the score at 14. Later, a one-yard run by senior Mason Aronson, capped by a two-point conversion run from sophomore Derrick Johnson, gave Sedona a 22-14 lead at halftime.

After a touchdown by the Falcons in the third quarter, they failed on a two point conversion attempt that would have tied the game. That would be their last chance, as Davis returned a punt 44 yards for a touchdown to give the Scorpions a 31-20 lead.

The Falcons scored a fourth-quarter touchdown, but it would not be enough, as Sedona junior quarterback Max Hauserman broke away for a 41-yard scoring run to seal the game.

“We’ve still got to get a lot better — we’re not aggressive enough on defense, we’ve just got a lot of things we need to improve on,” said Scorpions head coach Rick Walsworth. “We’re improving in some areas, and in some areas we’re not really getting better.”
