The Sedona Red Rock High School girls basketball team is big. But Camp Verde High School has a player who plays bigger.
Junior forward Mariah Daniels had 23 points and guards Maddy Showers and Gabby Ontiveros added timely second-half perimeter shooting as the Cowboys pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand the Scorpions their second 33-point home loss in less than a week, 74-51, on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
“We should have handled her better,” Sedona head girls basketball coach Jackie Strickling said. “Yeah, [Daniels is] a good player, but both of my posts were in foul trouble in the second half.”
Freshman Sophia Perry had 16 points and six rebounds but fouled out midway through the fourth quarter, while Strickling’s other post, senior Gabby Simon, continued to be hampered by foul trouble, scoring only two points to go along with 11 rebounds, playing with four personal fouls much of the second half.
