After a strong first half in which the Sedona Red Rock High School boys soccer team went up two goals on Northwest Christian High School, a concussion to sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Ruiz led to a 5-1 second half run and a loss to the Crusaders.

After a delay of 45 minutes due to late arrival by game officials, junior Jose Aviles picked up where he left off against Fountain Hills High School on Jan. 10, where he posted a hat trick with three goals.

Junior Rene Diaz’s assist to him for a goal in the seventh minute of the first half spearheaded the Scorpions’ offensive attack. Fifteen minutes later, Aviles took a rebound off a miss off the left goal post to make it a 2-0 halftime lead.

“We had a really good first half,” head coach Cindy Hauserman said. “We used our space well, the team attack was very unified and our team defending was very organized.”
