This is the spring for the Sedona Red Rock High School golf team to swing freely.

After four sophomore starters and a freshman combined for 19 team wins in 2013 dual matches against only eight losses, Scorpions head golf coach Dennis Mobley wants more than to just come close to the state tournament this time around.

He has set, in his own words, “high aspirations” for the team — the primary one being part of the top 25 percent of Division III schools to qualify for the postseason.

“This year, the goal is to qualify for state as a team,” he said, “something only 14 out of the 54 schools in Division III accomplished in 2013.”

Losing no starters to graduation certainly helps. Juniors Jasper Herrick, Skylar Richardson, Savanah Cooper and Dylan Sadler all return in the preseason Nos. 1 through 4 slots, in addition to Keagan Webster, the sole freshman starter last year.
Mobley believes that those five can achieve a top five finish for the Scorpions on Saturday, May 17, at the Division III state tournament at the relatively adjacent greens of Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott.

“This year, we aim to be in the hunt for the state title,” he said, “placing in the top five.”
