Sedona Red Rock High School girls tennis coach Carla Heckrodt hates sounding like a broken record, but her team is rebuilding.
“We’ve got a great group of kids out,” Heckrodt said. “They’re very cohesive. But they’re mostly beginners.”
Of the 11 Sedona Red Rock High School girls on Heckrodt’s roster, eight are “pretty much new to the sport,” she said, including junior No. 4 Yvesche Schlee, “who’s never played tennis before.”
Junior homeschooled student Paulina Lasia, by virtue of her experience playing United States Tennis Association youth tournaments, is the No. 1 singles player, followed by junior Keely Miller and senior Sarah Grover, who at No. 3 is the only returner from last year’s varsity. Those four girls will fill out the top two doubles teams as well.
“It’s unfortunate, but we don’t have a feeder program,” Heckrodt said. “So if we can get one, we’re able to work on strategy and more advanced technique.”
