Sprinter sisters Natalie and Sammie Cox placed first on two relay teams, while junior Andre Davis, senior Gabrielle Simon and four freshmen also grabbed Sedona Red Rock High School gold in track and field events Saturday, April 5, at the Red Rock Invitational.

The Scorpions girls team won the invitational with 76.5 points, while the boys team finished second to Snowflake High School.
Davis ran the 300-meter hurdles in less than 41 seconds to qualify automatically for the Division III state tournament beginning Friday, May 9, at Mesa Community College.

“All I needed to do was drop a second,” he said. “I’m not surprised; it’s just hard work. I’m not, like, in great shape yet. Coach Schneider says we’ve just started conditioning.”

Davis’ 110-meter hurdle time of 112 seconds was also a provisional qualifier — it is one of the top 25 times in Division III and would enter him into the state competition if the tournament began today.

Already a lock for the Division III state tournament next month with her 34-foot, 7-inch shot put and her 114-foot, 5-inch discus throw, which is currently No. 10 among all state throwers, Simon threw 110 feet, 10 inches to take home the Red Rock Invitational gold.

“It’s good to see my work paying off, but actually I want to be going a lot further right now,” she said. “I’m not happy with where I’m at.”
