Head coach Carla Heckrodt did not let a 9-0 loss to Fountain Hills High School dim the accomplishments this spring of her Sedona Red Rock High School girls tennis team.
“It’s always a learning curve, but we’re doing pretty darn good as inexperienced as we are,” she said. “In spite of the fact it seems we’re always starting from square one, if you can turn them onto the game and they enjoy it, you’ve succeeded with the season.”
The Scorpions fell to 5-4 and a No. 25 Division III seed after the shutout, which took place on the team’s Senior Night, a night that honored three girls — Laura Clark, Sarah Grover and Armenian exchange student Elen Harutyunyan — who had, including this year, only four years of tennis experience among them.
“I can’t say enough about the three girls who competed for us as seniors,” Heckrodt said. “Confidence, esteem, camaraderie are all something that they can keep with them after they’re gone. I’m glad to be a part of it.”
