Big Park Community School will not only host the Verde Valley Conference tournament through the championship game Saturday, April 26, the 12-2 Coyotes may have the inside track to win it this spring after a late start and a new head coach.

“I don’t care who we play or where we play with these girls.”

Across Sedona and the Verde Valley, coaches and players of K-8 girls know that when they hear those words, Kirk Westervelt is on their heels.

The two-time small school state runner-up girls basketball coach was asked at the last minute to handle Coyotes softball this spring and has made the most of it, winning at Cottonwood Middle School, 10-9, and even run-ruling perennial conference favorite Camp Verde Middle School on the Cowboys’ field, 17-5 in five innings.

“Camp Verde has dominated league softball for the last six years,” Westervelt said. “To dominate them on their field was almost surreal.”
