It may have been chilly outside but that didn’t stop Three Trees from an energetic performance as the first musician in the reboot of the city of Sedona’s Concerts in the Plaza series on Wednesday, May 7.

Three Trees began his set by explaining how he came up with his name. He said he was on an American Indian spirit quest in Idaho when he came up with the name roughly 14 years ago.

Originally from Michigan, Trees said he came to Sedona to reinvent himself and that both the tone of Sedona and the distance he had put between himself and his home town helped accomplish that.

His music covered a broad range of cultures, heavily influenced by tribal music in the Middle East, Africa and here in America. Trees incorporated instruments such as a didgeridoo, several drums and other non-reed woodwinds to create his sound. After playing each instrument in a build, he looped each sound to fill out the songs.

It wasn’t just about the music, though, as he proved while explaining a peculiar instrument.
