Sedona Red Rock High School was a wrist injury away from a top five finish at this spring’s Division III state golf tournament.

Junior Savanah Cooper was forced to drop out of the tournament Saturday, May 17, at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott.

Otherwise, the Scorpions could have overcome a two-stroke final margin to fifth-place Payson High School, if not more of the 78-stroke final deficit to Division III champ Valley Christian High School.

“Frustrated, and tears as well,” father and SRRHS assistant coach Monty Cooper described her daughter’s feelings after the Scorpions could not capitalize on her first-round 84 at Antelope Hills’ south course Friday, May 16. “She felt like she should’ve shot more competitive rounds.

“She just had to withdraw. She couldn’t participate at 100 percent.”
