The second Summer 5K Series brought in the season without the smoke Thursday, May 29.

Adam Vess set a new course record at Posse Grounds Park with a 16:52 finish in his one-second victory over fellow Flagstaff resident Danny Mercado in the kickoff to the second year of the series, on the first clear, cool evening since the Slide Fire began.

“Great weather,” said Ali Baxter, Sedona Recreation and Aquatics supervisor. “You couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful night.”

Vess’ sister, Brie, was the top female finisher overall with a time of 23:53. Series veteran Jesse Martin was the first local finisher at 20:44, good enough for fourth place behind Connor Shelley of Flagstaff at 20:05.
