Red Rock Rotary jumped out to an early lead in the Sedona Parks and Recreation Department’s Summer Softball League with two victories Thursday, June 5, by a combined score of 27-5 at Posse Grounds Park.

Pitcher Dan Schneberger hung a 17-0 shutout on Another Team in Rotary’s first of two games on the evening, followed up by a 10-5 win over the Red Rock Rebels to polarize the two teams in the 10-team league early.

“The 10-plus runs don’t really surprise us,” said Nick Hastings, Red Rock Rotary head coach and Rotary Club of Sedona president. “We want to go out and hang 10 runs in every game to have a good chance of winning.”

That kind of offensive production is necessary in a league in which 10 or more runs were scored by every winner except one June 5 — the Night Ballers, who edged the Mighty Ducks of L’Auberge de Sedona resort, 8-7, in the opener on the lower softball field at Posse Grounds.

“We like to try and play small ball as much as we can,” Hastings said. “With the ‘one-for-one’ home run rule, power is not always your friend.”
