Make no mistake: The Sedona Red Rock High School football team is ready for action.
After responding to the challenge of Division II Phoenix Greenway High School by winning “70 to 80 percent” of their one-on-one matchups, according to assistant coach John Bradshaw, in a Big Man Competition, the Scorpions returned home Monday, Aug. 4, from their team camp in Irvine, Calif., prepared for game action — for the first time in Bradshaw’s 10 years of coaching.
“They came over and wanted a piece of us,” Scorpions head coach Ken Selle said. “Well, they got us. The defense in the seven-on-seven with Greenway was unbelievable — I think we had, like, six picks.”
A 30-man program is led by 13 seniors this fall, including starting quarterback Max Hauserman, running back Andre Davis, linebacker Scott Moker, wide receiver Brian Nguyen, punter Stefan Zielinski and linemen Mason Bradshaw, Jose Rivas, Luis Robles, Zeke Saxman and Kevin Schweiss, who did what no SRRHS football team had done in the past decade at the preseason camp — ran the steep, sandy hill by their Irvine football field before breakfast every morning.
