West Sedona School welcomed a new group of international visitors on Friday, Aug. 15, when 55 Korean children ages 8 to 10 — along with 14 adult chaperones and translators — toured the school and met with fourth-grade and fifth-grade classes as part of a four-week summer camp.

The visitors — from different backgrounds and possessing varying levels of English language skills — came from South Korea to be immersed in English and to experience American culture.

“The focus is for them to learn English,” camp volunteer Arlene Gold said. “They also get to interact with English-speaking kids.”

According to Program Director Haejung Jung, the camp is an English as a second language — ESL — program through a partnership between the Sedona Meditation Center, Brain Education Center in South Korea and Orme School in Mayer.
