A state championship is not just a dream to Sedona Red Rock High School volleyball — it is an expectation.

But that will happen when five of the Scorpions’ eight-player returning varsity core wins 15 of its 18 games in a summer team camp at Arizona State University — despite playing the wrong schedule.

“They got the records wrong and put us in the silver division,” head coach John Parks said. “We started off really good — some teams we played were not quite what we expected, but we won it anyway.”

So much for the poise test as SRRHS prepares to host its rival from across the Verde Valley, Mingus Union High School, at
6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4.

“It’ll be a good game; I’m excited,” said junior middle hitter Kendall Woellmer, one of three experienced hitters returning along the front line for the Scorpions. “I’m definitely aiming for State.”

The Scorpions went 15-3 overall, including a perfect 4-0 mark July 18, in the Student Resource Center and in Wells Fargo Arena at ASU against such larger programs as South Mountain and Peoria Sunrise Mountain high schools, said Parks, who nevertheless downplayed the accomplishment.
