Every time the volleyball net rises in the Sedona Red Rock High School main gymnasium, the Scorpions’ Great Wall gets a little wider.

Seniors DeVonne Ryter and Shamina Thode were there from the beginning, teaming up to set and slam home points from the right corner while blocking similar attempts from the opponent with surprising power.

“It comes out of nowhere,” Scorpions head coach John Parks said of Thode. “She really goes up, and not only does she hit the ball, she gets there so quick. I think she catches a lot of teams off guard.”

After the SRRHS straight-set victory, 25-14, 25-11 and 25-18 over cross-Verde Valley rival Mingus Union High School at home, add junior Regan Hurkett to the near-impenetrable concrete mix on the left side.
