Los Illegals topple A Day in the West for 1st title1 min read

Los Illegals, in its first year as a Sedona Adult Softball League team, led by head coach and pitcher Mauro Trahin Sr., third from left, handed A Day in the West its only loss of the summer Thursday, Sept. 11, to win the championship, presented by the Sedona Parks and Recreation department, at Posse Grounds Park.

There were rainouts, upsets, no-shows and forfeits — and those were all before the playoffs even started.

The championship game of the Sedona Adult Softball League finals Thursday, Sept. 11, added ejections to the list, as Los Illegals clean-up hitter Cesar Felix, after an over-the-shoulder catch at third base and doubling another runner off second base, was thrown out of the game by the home plate umpire in the sixth inning for profanity directed at him and the players, clearing the dugouts.

“I’m surprised nobody went to jail tonight,” said A Day in the West head coach and shortstop Pedro Ortega Sr. “The sportsmanship was very poor. Throwing F-bombs with a lot of kids around, I don’t think is appropriate. I don’t want to compete with that.”

Felix’s emotions, Los Illegals assistant coach Jose Esquer said, got the best of him.

“He’s a competitor,” Esquer said. “Maybe he shouldn’t have said some of the things he said, but we couldn’t stop that, even if we were coaches — we’re a bunch of grown men out here on the field.”
