As one injured Sedona Red Rock High School volleyball player returned to face another rival, another Scorpion exited the gym Thursday, Sept. 11.

Following the Coconino High School Classic on Saturday, Sept. 13, sophomore middle hitter Sophia Perry has emerged as the Scorpions’ leading blocker at the net after watching their first two wins from the sidelines in a walking boot — inserted as a precaution over concerns, dispelled Sept. 9, that she might miss the season due to a broken foot.

“It’s scary to think about, but I was really happy to hear those results,” Perry said. “Blocking’s fun. We have a lot of tall girls.”

But Thursday, Sept. 11, with the Scorpions [9-3-3] halfway through a 25-8, 25-11, 25-12 sweep of Division IV, Section IV rival Camp Verde High School, junior Regan Hurkett — who already had recorded four kills — jumped high at the net for another kill and collided with Cowboys junior Dusty Dowdle.

“I hope it’s just a sprain,” junior Kendall Woellmer said of her teammate’s right ankle, which was stretched out and iced on the Scorpions’ bench. “We’re definitely hoping she comes back tomorrow. We’ll miss her, for sure.”

Hurkett, the tallest player on the team, is also the only left-handed SRRHS hitter.

“It would be nice if I had my full squad for more than a week, but that’s how it goes sometimes,” Scorpions head coach John Parks said. “Regan’s a big loss.”
