Sedona Red Rock High School made its first sectional statement in a long time as a football program Friday, Sept. 26.

Junior Bailey Ehrlich caught three passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns as the Scorpions [4-1] opened Division V, Section VII play with a resounding 35-6 victory over rival Camp Verde High School.

“I’m proud of the way they played,” Scorpions head coach Ken Selle said. “It was a team effort all the way around.”

On the second play from scrimmage, senior Zeke Saxman surged into Cowboys quarterback Bodie Holowell at his 9-yard-line. He ended up not only forcing the fumble, but picking it up, running it into the end zone, then kicking the extra point to set the tone for the blowout.

“We obviously got big plays across the board, particularly the opening fumble for the touchdown,” Selle said. “It gave us a tremendous mental lift on both sides of the ball.”

It gave the Scorpions a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game, which demoralized the Cowboys, Selle said — and which he told Saxman would happen.

“I said, ‘If you put the ball in the end zone, we’re going to make a play,’” Selle said. “And he made a play. I don’t think they ever really recovered from that miscue.”
