It didn’t take long for an Estudantez club soccer team to have a first-place finish this fall — even with no bench.

“Friday, [Sept. 26], we found out that another girl was not going to make it,” said Derio Urueta, head coach of the team for girls ages 13 and under. “A lot of girls ended up getting sick that week. It was a bad week.”

The remaining 11 girls brought home the TSA Cup anyway Sunday, Sept. 28, beating the Tucson Soccer Academy after a 2-2 tie with the team the day before.

“Their passing game was phenomenal,” Urueta said. “Our philosophy, the way that they played, that’s pretty much what shined the entire weekend. We only had the bare minimum to even play, so we played very well.”
