As the fall cool settles into the waters of the Sedona Community Pool, the race to reign at regional swimming meets heats up with the 3:30 p.m. convergence Thursday, Oct. 16, of Mingus Union High School and Northland Preparatory Academy.

“This is one of those meets that times don’t even matter to me,” said A. Jay Bronson, Sedona Red Rock High School head swimming coach. “It’s about racing and enjoying the sport of racing.”

As Bronson knows, those teams won’t be there for any ordinary three-team meet. They’re after the Sedona-Mingus and Elevation Cups, which the Scorpions have proudly owned and displayed in the front trophy case at the high school since 2011.

“I’m hopeful to keep the Mingus,” Bronson said. “The Elevation, I’m afraid, might be moving up to Flag[staff]. NPA has more depth than we do this year and more year-round swimmers.”
