Can anybody beat the Clarkdale-Jerome School?
That is the central question on the minds of the “A” volleyball teams from Big Park Community School, Oak Creek Ranch School and five other Verde Valley Conference teams going into their two-day tournament beginning Friday, Oct. 24, at West Sedona School.
The host Wildcats will be the first to find out, as they open the tournament at 2 p.m. seeded eighth against the 14-0 Mingus Rams.
“Their strengths are really noticeable,” said Patricia Etcheverry, head coach for the Wildcats. “They have great knowledge of the game, they have a lot of good teamwork, they don’t quit — they fight to the very end. And they don’t get rattled very easily.”
If Desiray Davis can get her low, fast serve working, the Wildcats have a shot. They led late in both games against the Mingus Rams the last time the teams played before serving errors and positioning issues in their service return game came back to bite them.
