Any team in any sport that can hold its opponent to one point has reason to feel good about itself.
It’s becoming just part of another girls basketball season at Big Park Community School under head coach Kirk Westervelt.
Behind 18 points from his daughter Mary and another 18 from eighth-grader Audrey Perry, the Coyotes blitzed West Sedona School, 46-1, in their season opener Nov. 12. Braeden Feldtkeller also grabbed eight rebounds to prevent any second chances for the Wildcats, in their first game under new head coach Donna Wiseman.
“We should compete for the league title,” Westervelt said, “and hope to be the No. 1 seed for the final tournament at the end of the season.”
With the routs of Verde Valley Conference opponents his “A” team has orchestrated so far, those expectations may turn out to be quite modest by the time of the conference tournament Friday, Jan. 30.
