Freshman guard Liza Westervelt had 15 points in her Sedona Red Rock High School debut Tuesday, Dec. 2, but the Scorpions could not cut their deficit to Mingus Union High School below six points in a 60-46 loss.
Junior Annie Parrella, Westervelt’s counterpart along the guard line, added 14 but could not finish strong due to foul trouble incurred from defending Marauders senior guard Angelyna Razo, who led all scorers with 23 points.
“Annie couldn’t do it because she was in foul trouble, but when I got in foul trouble, we had to have someone else do it,” Westervelt said. “I don’t like losing, and obviously the team doesn’t either, but once we practice more and get to know each other better, we’re going to be a solid team.”
Foul trouble, along with tired legs, also limited Westervelt to just three second-half points, as she and Parrella drew Razo for most of the final two quarters in a box-and-one defense.
“It’s still kind of a work in progress,” Westervelt said. “Our team, as a whole did pretty good. Obviously, we have some things to work on — mainly, passing against the press.”
MUHS played a press defense all game, and with Parrella and Westervelt both saddled with four fouls, the Scorpions faded against it in the final four minutes.
