Five Sedona Red Rock High School seniors who have not played competitive basketball in at least two years will be welcomed home with six games against at least three higher-division opponents in five days Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Red Rock Classic.
“I don’t know what we’ve got,” returning boys basketball head coach C.J. Sells admitted prior to the Scorpions’ home opener Tuesday, Dec. 2, against Mingus Union High School. “Two sophomores, three juniors, eight seniors — but of those eight, only three played last year.
“We’ve got some great athletes with basketball skill — fast, long and quick. But with a minute to go, they haven’t been there before.”
Neither point guard Tucker Davis nor small forward Gary Schlee have played basketball since they were freshmen, while point guard Dylan McNeill and center Jasper Herrick are new entirely to the game of high school basketball.
“Dawson Stevenson and Walker Cox are both sophomore forwards, but potentially could be starters,” Sells said. “For awhile, before all the seniors came out, I thought we might have to start freshmen on varsity.”
Add junior guard Garrison Skornik, whom Sells said “plays with his hair on fire,” to the mix and Sells has virtually his entire 13-man roster he is looking to give as many game minutes as possible in the fourth annual Red Rock Classic, which the Scorpions will open against another Division II opponent, Copper Canyon High School, at 1:30 p.m.
