A Sedona Red Rock High School girls soccer losing streak extending back 11 games and 11 months into last season was brought to a merciful end with a tie Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.
Freshman Gwendolyn Robinson scored two goals in a 2-2 result against North High School to stop a Scorpions slide that began after their first game of 2014, a 7-0 shutout of Glendale Prep on Jan. 9. That would be their last win before injuries decimated SRRHS goalkeepers and set off a 10-game skid to end the season.
“Last year we had the injury bug hit us right as we were really racking up some good results,” said second-year head coach Juan Carlos Aguilar. “We have been proactive in injury prevention this year in hopes that it won’t become as big of a problem again.”
Whether or not SRRHS can advance to the tournament semifinals Friday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m., the result Dec. 2 will allow a new beginning for a young varsity 16 players strong.
“Each player has played,” Aguilar said. “It has given us a great opportunity to try some new things with the formation on the field. We are very happy with the results and happier that the players are responding to tactical changes and shifts during the run of play.”
Not only is that response very valuable, Aguilar said, heading into his girls’ home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, against Estrella Foothills High School, it has eased the loss of eight seniors to graduation and begun to fill the near year-long void in goal for the Scorpions.
