Yes, Virginia, there is a boys soccer game in Sedona.
More than 11 months since head coach Cindy Hauserman’s Sedona Red Rock High School varsity routed Page High School by six goals on Senior Day last season, the Scorpions boys soccer program will play its first home game of its current season Thursday, Jan. 8, against Glendale Preparatory Academy.
The Scorpions’ home opener was scheduled for Dec. 13 against Mingus Union High School, with another matchup at SRRHS scheduled for six days later against Valley Lutheran High School.
Neither game was completed. The Flames did not even have seven players available Dec. 19.
“We are waiting to hear from our athletic director, John Parks, to find out when” those games will be played, Hauserman said. “The Mingus game was suspended due to weather and is being rescheduled.”
With the high school’s campus closed until Monday, Jan. 5, Hauserman and assistant coach Juan Beltran Jr. are also waiting on a junior varsity schedule, to see when Beltran will coach his first game.
Overall, no Scorpions boys soccer team has played an Arizona Interscholastic Association game since
Dec. 11 — a 5-1 win at Paradise Honors High School.
“The Paradise Honors game was a good ice-breaker for the season, but our momentum got stymied when our other games got delayed,” Hauserman said. “And then school let out for two weeks.”
