Senior Jose Aviles-Moya’s rebound goal off junior Francisco Hernandez-Perez’s penalty kick wasn’t enough to overcome Sedona Red Rock High School’s two-goal deficit to Mingus Union High School.
The 2-1 loss in 26 minutes Saturday, Jan. 17, was the completion of a Dec. 13 game in which MUHS had gone up, 2-0, off two goals in the first 54 minutes of play before stormy weather suspended play.
“Not really a tough loss for us,” Scorpions head coach Cindy Hauserman said. “The way I see it, [it was] 26 minutes versus Mingus on a beautiful Saturday and we win 1-0.”
Hernandez-Perez’s play has allowed Hauserman to be a little more flip with three regular-season games to play and the Scorpions securely seeded for the Division III state tournament in February. Seeded ninth by the Arizona Interscholastic Association as of Jan. 17, SRRHS [6-5-1] could host a first-round playoff game if they manage to finish ranked eighth or better after Senior Night on Thursday, Jan. 29.
