Earth, Wind & Fire’s Larry Dunn: It’s all about the music1 min read

Larry Dunn was responsible for much of Earth, Wind & Fire’s massive success in the 1970s and 1980s. The accomplished keyboard player will visit Sedona as part of Sedona International Film Festival.

Keyboard player Larry Dunn was instrumental in catapulting Earth, Wind & Fire into R&B stardom, resulting in sales of more than 100 million albums worldwide, six Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards, a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame — and yet his most interesting bit of advice has nothing at all to do with music.

“Always have a full tank of gas,” he said, explaining how easily one might become stranded on the rumble strip after hours of sitting in stalled traffic on Los Angeles’s highways. Dunn’s wife — singer, composer and producer Luisa Dunn — is the person in charge of making sure he never gets in this sticky situation.

“She’s an amazing, amazing woman,” Larry Dunn added. “Every day is Valentine’s Day with us.”

Statements like this occur frequently when talking with the accomplished musician. For a man so focused on the romantic and sentimental, it’s perhaps appropriate that his documentary is called “It’s About Love: The Larry Dunn Story” — which Sedona-based director Greg Miller described as “an inspiring and heart-warming glimpse at Larry and his wife Luisa’s secret to making great music.”
