School strikes deal for new field1 min read

Jerson Mendoza, of Sedona Red Rock High School, practices his field goal kicks on the artificial turf field at the school. With each kick, fragments of the field kick up in the air. During construction of the field, the proper UV protective sealant was not applied and the field is starting to break down from the elements.

Sedona Red Rock High School’s stadium field has been in a state of disrepair since 2012, according to Sedona-Oak Creek School District Superintendent David Lykins,  but that situation is about to change.

On March 2, the SOCSD Governing Board dicussed in executive session an offer from FieldTurf to replace the existing stadium field. Though unable to give confidential details of the session, Lykins said the board’s lawyers — all prepaid, he insisted, costing the district no extra consultation fees — allowed them “to fight a billion-dollar company” in order to guarantee a safe field for SRRHS’ students.

The final result was a vote to accept the company’s offer.

“We have a deficient field,” Lykins said after the public meeting. He outlined a series of escalating events, from the first alerts of unusual wear on the turf surface, to the installation of a new protectant that only served to make the material more brittle, to the final diagnosis: An ultraviolet-resistant material had been applied to the field during installation, but not the proper one to protect it from the strong Arizona sun.
