Inspired by meeting the former Sedona Red Rock High School sprinter whose records he is pursuing, senior Andre Davis won two hurdles races to help the Scorpions boys track and field team win the Skydome Classic.

Davis streaked to victory in the 60-meter dash and hurdles competitions, finishing each in less than seven-and-a-half and nine seconds, respectively. Davis, head coach Harry Schneider said, is within “a couple of tenths” of seconds of breaking the SRRHS records in the 110- and 300-meter high hurdles, set by Northern Arizona University relay runner Chris Eastman.

Seniors Kevin Alvarez and Tia Myers, boys and girls champions in the 800 meters Wednesday, March 11, are two more of that group in great shape, Schneider said.

“Tia and Kevin ran well,” he said. “They won very easily.”

In the shot put finals, sophomore Hannah Ringel duplicated her 37-foot, 6-inch personal best throw from her preliminary round to bring home the gold for the girls, who finished three points ahead of host Northland Preparatory Academy for fourth place.

Alvarez, who also took fifth place in the 400 meters, and Davis joined junior Wyatt Stevenson and sophomore Luke Doerner to finish less than three seconds out of first in the 4×400 boys relay.
