Atop Sedona Red Rock High School’s varsity girls tennis ladder are two m-and-m’ers who, on their fifth try, showed how quickly they can work together — and win.

After the Scorpions had won just three games in their first four losses, seniors Keely Miller and Samantha Muellner lost a total of seven games in their three singles and doubles matches to lead the girls team to its first match win Monday, March 30, 7-2 at Bourgade Catholic High School.

“We’re finally getting a little more serious,” head coach Phil Kovac said. “Time will tell — we’ve still got another nine [matches] to go.”

Miller doubled up the top singles player for the Golden Eagles, Mariah Nolan, in straight sets. She would team up with Muellner, who shut out her singles opponent, Anita Magyor, to rout Bourgade in doubles as well, 8-1.

“I think we’ve got a ways to go, but we’re definitely further ahead than I expected, to be honest,” Kovac said. “The girls are getting, in the singles, where they need to be. Keely, Sam and Yvesche are getting stronger every match.”

Senior Yvesche Schlee only lost one set to Kira Silva in her straight-set singles win 6-0, 6-1. The No. 3 singles match win equaled the Scorpions’ individual match victory total for the entire season before sophomore Fernanda Valencia and the Hermosillo twins surpassed it, making a clean sweep of Bourgade in the singles matches.
