Nearly 100 residents turned out to hear what the city has in mind for an area of town that has often had more questions than answers as to its future.

The city hosted the meeting on Tuesday, March 31, at the Sedona Public Library and offered large diagrams of the planned community focus areas, specifically one being dubbed the “Western Gateway.”

The purpose of the CFA it to implement the vision and goals of the Community Plan, which was approved by voters last year. The planning process provides an opportunity for the public, property owners and stakeholders to express their ideas for future improvements and development in each individual CFA.

“We have 13 CFAs, which call for specific planning, with each having unique characteristics associated with them,” said Sedona Senior Planner Mike Raber, who led the meeting.

Included in the Western Gateway CFA are the Sedona Cultural Park, Sedona Red Rock High School, Yavapai College’s Sedona Center, Verde Valley Medical Center’s Sedona campus and the immediate surrounding areas. Key topics for that area include land use as well as sense of community and pedestrian and bicycle accessibility, transit and parking.

According to the city’s report, the Community Plan provides some direction for land uses in this area, but also recognizes the need for leeway to help provide incentives for property owners and to provide for other potential community benefits.
