West Sedona School can avenge its only baseball setback with a home win Tuesday, April 7, against Camp Verde Middle School.
The Wildcats blasted Mayer Elementary School, 23-4, in four innings Tuesday, March 31, to advance to 6-1.
“I’m not taking anything away from Camp Verde — they did what they needed to do and we faced a pretty good pitcher — but we had to figure out what our kids were capable of first,” head coach Pedro Ortega Sr. said after a March 5 loss to the Cowboys. “I’ve made several changes since that game.”
A faster batting order and infield, for instance, as second baseman Jonathan Lamparter was moved in from the outfield and third baseman Clark Diaz was moved into the leadoff spot in the batting order as a base-stealing threat.
Diaz and No. 3 hitter Bradley Howard, who combined to go seven for eight at the plate against Mayer, are Ortega’s fastest players.
