Wherever the postseason road ends this weekend for Samantha Muellner, the Sedona Red Rock High School senior will at least know she had fun making her deepest run.

Muellner, the only Scorpions tennis player still alive in the Division III tournament, will play the top-ranked girls singles player in Division III, Estrella Foothills High School sophomore Zoey Nelson, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 1.

“This is as deep as I’ve ever gone,” said Muellner, who will play No. 1 seed Zoey Nelson of Estrella Foothills High School at the Paseo Racquet Center. “I mostly just did it for fun. I didn’t expect to win; it just sort of happened.”

The former United States Tennis Association club player has played tennis since the age of 4, lastly for Coronado High School in San Diego.

“I just wanted a change from where I lived in California,” she explained. “I liked the red rocks, so peaceful and nice. I’m used to four times the population being tourists, so crowded everywhere. Here, there’s definitely a lot less — just two times.”
