Limitation bred creativity during Sedona Art Center’s 12 by 12 show on Friday, June 12.

Local artists submitted work restricted to a square-foot of space for a fundraiser to expand the SAC’s education programs. All work was the same cost and the artist’s name was not provided until after a purchase. The fundraiser totaled $20,000, with remaining works for sale to be posted at the SAC website.

Several artists were present during the show, including Beth Jaynes, who submitted two pieces for the show, “Lofty Airs” and “Forest Romance II.”

Jaynes, who grew up here in the 1950s, said she had been in a class in her teens at SAC but hadn’t done much since until this show. The challenge to create something within a square inspired her to look through old drawings to see if something could be remade that would benefit from the shape.

“It gives you a different perspective. It was fun,” she said.

This was also Jaynes’ first acrylic on canvas she had done for a show. It had her thinking about doing more shows in the future.

“I like offbeat stuff. To be square instead of normal,” she said. “It’s kind of like getting in a stick shift versus an automatic.”
