West Sedona School will join a wide-open Verde Valley League tournament on a roll.

Eighth-grader Amari Sonn’s serves led the Wildcats to their second win in a row, a straight-set victory at Pine Strawberry Elementary School, 25-17, 25-17, Thursday, Oct. 15.

The win over the Buffalos ensured West Sedona third place and a 10-4 record heading into the Verde Valley League tournament.

“We have amazing servers now — every single person is on target — so that makes a big difference,” head coach Patricia Etcheverry said. “We’re working on defense. They’re competitive, but it’s middle school volleyball — sometimes they show up, sometimes they don’t.”

Etcheverry cited games at Clarkdale-Jerome and at Mayer Elementary schools, where the service game failed the Wildcats and they took themselves out of the match mentally — particularly their last loss, Oct. 1 at league tournament host Clarkdale.

The Wildcats won the first game, 25-16, against the then-undefeated Mingus Rams, only to score just two points in the second game prior to losing a 15-9 tiebreaker.
