Scorpions bounce back again to beat Bulldogs1 min read

Annie Parrella, No. 3, one of two senior volleyball players at Sedona Red Rock High School, sets the ball for sophomore Taylor White while junior Hannah Ringel, No. 16, backs up the play. Parrella and co-captain Kendall Woellmer were honored on Senior Night before the Scorpions’ Thursday, Oct. 29, home season finale against Cesar Chavez High School.

In their final home sectional match, Annie Parrella had 32 assists to help set up eight kills by fellow senior co-captain Kendall Woellmer as Sedona Red Rock High School snapped a losing streak and beat visiting Barry Goldwater High School in four games Tuesday, Oct. 28, to stay in State consideration.

The Scorpions were led by 10 kills from sophomore Julia Koss and nine more to go with four aces from junior Shelby Brackin, who reinjured her right thumb in the second game of a 25-12, 26-24, 22-25, 25-18 win that secured fourth place in Division III, Section VII.

“We had a 22-20 lead when she went out, and we were able to eke out that second game,” said John Parks, SRRHS head volleyball coach and athletic director. “I think she’ll be all right — she just jammed it.”

Parrella had six kills of her own in the win over the higher-ranked Bulldogs [10-7], possibly securing a bid in the state tournament for SRRHS [9-6] after it lost its previous two matches.

The Scorpions put away their second win against a higher-ranked opponent by starting strong and bouncing back, what has become their modus operandi in one of the state’s most competitive volleyball sections.

“We always seem to come out clicking right away,” Parks said. “That’s kind of been the story of the season: We’re close, and we can rally with teams and make great plays, but we just can’t quite put the ball away. We’re still getting better.”
