Florence awaits volleyball in tournament first round2 min read

Sophomore Liza Westervelt bumps an incoming serve for Sedona Red Rock High School, backed up by senior co-captain Kendall Woellmer, No. 2. Westervelt has been the Scorpions’ team leader in aces, digs and return efficiency heading into the Division III state tournament, which the Scorpions will open as the No. 27 seed against sixth-seeded Florence High School. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, in the Prescott Valley Events Center.

After sweeping Cesar Chavez High School on Senior Night, Sedona Red Rock High School earned a date with the No. 6 seed in the Division III state volleyball tournament.

With 25-18, 25-17 and 25-16 wins Thursday, Oct. 29, over the Champions, the Scorpions earned a No. 27 seed at State.

“Once they were finally announced, they were pretty excited,” head coach John Parks said. “Screams and tears of relief and joy.”

The Scorpions, who have only missed the postseason four times in program history, will open in the Prescott Valley Events Center on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 3 p.m. against sixth-seeded Florence High School.

“They’ve always had a really good program,” Parks said. “We’ve been there, we know what it’s like. This’ll be a tough matchup for us.”

In the Senior Night win over the Champions, SRRHS demonstrated the game-to-game improvement Parks has touted all season.

“I think we were a bad matchup for them,” he said. “Some of their blocking schemes really fit into what we do, so once I saw what they were doing, I wasn’t really worried about it.”

Senior co-captains Annie Parrella and Kendall Woellmer made their final volleyball match at SRRHS one for the books, as Parrella racked up another 38 assists to go with an ace and four kills, while Woellmer was second on the team in kills with 10.

“In 22 years of coaching, I’ve been really fortunate to have some great kids,” Parks said. “They’re two of the best I’ve ever had. They just do whatever you ask, and they work their butt off.

“I always count on them. They were two great leaders of the team all year.”
