The Hopi High School Bruins still managed to find a way to beat Sedona Red Rock High School, even after suffering a 43-0 Senior Night blowout at the hands of the Scorpions.
“Before the game, I told the guys, ‘No one thinks we’re going to come out and win this game. I think it’s going to be 30-0 at halftime,’” said head coach John Bradshaw, who, in his first year, tied the program record for most single-season wins. “So let’s go out and make it happen.”
They did, going up 30-0 at halftime Friday, Oct. 30. Yet when the state tournament brackets came out the next day, it was the Scorpions who finished behind the Bruins.
One fewer loss for Hopi [7-2] was deemed good enough by the Arizona Interscholastic Association to earn the final Division V playoff seed, while SRRHS [7-3] had the dubious consolation of being the first team out.
“They found a way to make it hurt a little,” said Bradshaw, whose team finished ahead of Hopi in second place in Section VII. “Doesn’t make any sense at all.”
Especially after a thorough domination by the Scorpions, led one more time on offense by senior wide receiver Bailey Ehrlich, who impressed Northern Arizona University scouts in attendance with three touchdowns on 153 yards receiving in the first half alone.
