Junior Malia SoNN, No. 19, fights North Pointe Preparatory Academy defenders for control of the ball Jan. 21 at Sedona Red Rock High School. The health of Sonn, who booted a 25-yard goal before injuring her left ankle Tuesday, Feb. 2, during a 4-3 state tournament win over Chandler Prep, will be key for the Scorpions to advance to the Division IV state girls soccer semifinals. Tuesday, Feb. 2, Sedona Red Rock High School’s 4-3 girls soccer playoff win over Chandler Preparatory Academy was the last in a day of firsts.

■ It was the first state tournament win for fourth-year head coach Juan Carlos Aguilar.

“It feels great,” he said. “You have that relief.

“You want them to succeed all the time. At the same time, you have to be prepared to lose.”

■ It was the first postseason appearance, much less win, for the Scorpions’ six seniors, including striker Mason Feldtkeller, whose two goals helped topple the Titans.

“If there was a ball there, I was going to be there faster than the defender,” said Feldtkeller, who powered her 32nd goal of the season off her chest and just over the left goal line with 32:52 to play. “There were three people in front of me, but it felt like I kind of just managed to push the ball off my chest and into the goal with my body.”

The goal tied her for sixth in the state with Arete Prep’s Crystal Akpede.

“She’s an awesome player,” Aguilar said. “She trained hard, and now it’s her time. She needs to enjoy it, to the end.”

But it was Feldtkeller’s quick center pass to sophomore Marissa Pedroza with just over 11 minutes to play that would set up her game-winning goal.

“I felt like it was going to go out,” said Pedroza, who just slipped a 10-yard kick into the right corner of the Titans’ net. “I was proud of me.”

■ With the win, the third-seeded Scorpions host their first-ever Division IV state quarterfinal at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, when sixth-seeded Pusch Ridge Christian Academy visits from Tucson.

“We’re going to go wherever they want to take us,” Aguilar said. “These other teams, they come and give their all and they can win.”

■ Finally, it was the first time SRRHS had to mobilize a special staff to clear snow off the field in order for it to be playable.

“We were going to re-schedule for [Wednesday, Feb. 3], but that didn’t work for anyone,” said SRRHS athletic director John Parks, who joined principal Darrin Karuzas and six others with snow shovels from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 2.

“It was a killer assembly line out there,” said Karuzas, whose team finished pushing an inch-thick layer of white off the field in five-yard strips, from north to south, less than an hour before kickoff.

The Scorpions started the game almost as cold as the ice-lined field before Feldtkeller punched in a point-blank center shot off a 50-yard assist from Pedroza with nearly 16 minutes gone in the first half.

“We were slow, a little out of it,” Feldtkeller said. “We’ll have some training and we’ll be ready. I can’t remember the last time we even got this far.”

To get any further, they will need junior Malia Sonn, who gave SRRHS a 2-0 lead nearly 12 minutes later off a 25-yard long shot that soared into the net over the outstretched leap of Titans goalkeeper Courtney Weidemann.

“I thought it was going to go over at first, and then, when it went in, it felt amazing,” said Sonn, who limped off the field with 14 minutes to play to rest and tape her left ankle injured in a collision with Titans freshman Beyonca Ware. “I’m going to lay off it for a little bit.”

She added she would be ready to go Feb. 6, which will be key as Aguilar had just two players on the bench to begin the postseason.

“I’m happy with where we’re at,” he said. “Every single game, they learn about themselves. When against the ropes, win or lose, they work hard for each other.”

“I’m looking forward, hopefully, to get farther,” Pedroza added, “and maybe win this whole thing.”
