An anonymous bomb threat sent on Wednesday, April 6, to administrators at Sedona Red Rock High School resulted in frayed nerves but no evacuation.

According to Cmdr. Marlayne Hatler, of the Sedona Police Department, an anonymous email was sent prior to the beginning of school that stated that the sender planned to bring explosives onto campus that morning. The threat came in prior to school starting, so there were no students on campus and few teachers, Hatler said. When teachers arrived, they were asked to search their classrooms to see if there was anything suspicious or out of place.

SRRHS is normally on late-start on Wednesdays. According to journalism senior Emma Keider, numerous students did not come to class or were checked out of class by their parents as the morning progressed.

An email from the high school to parents stated, “We received an email that could potentially compromise school safety. We are working closely with local police agencies and the school safety team to analyze the validity of the threat. We are taking every precaution for student and staff safety. At this point it has been determined that school is safe and in session and we will conduct business as usual.”

Hatler said police were questioning a number of students who she said are potential suspects. In addition, officers were busy interviewing staff to see if any students had made recent threats or to compare the email to the writing styles of any of the students.

As a precautionary measure, she said officers will remain on both the high school and West Sedona School campuses throughout the day.

“This is something we take very seriously,” Hatler said.
