A head-on collision on Thursday, May 5, left several occupants injured and closed State Route 89A through Oak Creek Canyon for more than 90 minutes.
According to Battalion Chief Jayson Coil, of the Sedona Fire District, crews received a call at 3:24 p.m. of the accident and were on scene two minutes later.
The incident occurred south of the Trout Farm, which closed traffic in both directions. Emergency personnel immediately began triage and treatment for the patients of both a Prius and full-sized work van.
In all, three SFD engines, three ambulances and one Guardian Air helicopter were on the scene. Four occupants of the vehicles were transported to the Verde Valley Medical Center and Flagstaff Medical Center, two of whom with serious injuries, Coil said.
The force of the impact caused lengths of rebar inside the van to fly through the front windshield.
“Fortunately the rebar missed the occupants, but it serves as a good reminder to the additional risk presented by flying objects inside a vehicle,” Coil said.
After all patients were transported, Sedona Fire personnel used a solution called biosolve, a hydrocarbon mitigation agent, to safely clean up the fluids and reduce the risk of environmental damage, he said. 
In addition to SFD crews, Sedona Police Department and Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to the accident.
