Former major league baseball player Ken Phelps leads instruction in baseball and softball fundamentals Saturday, June 11, at a clinic at Posse Grounds Park.
Phelps, a 1989 World Series champion first baseman and Arizona Diamondbacks color commentator, has developed a program as community development consultant for Arizona Public Services that teaches batting, throwing and baserunning as well as infield and outfield drills.
The two-and-a-half hour clinic, which begins at 9 a.m. June 11, is open only to members of Big Brothers Big Sisters programs.
“We conduct outreach clinics for approximately 750 adults and kids yearly in communities we serve,” said Phelps, in his 18th year with APS. “[We] also talk about education and life lessons.”
About 50 mentors and their Big Brothers Big Sisters members from Prescott will join other retired baseball players like infielders Lou Klimchock and Dave Hilton, and 1981 American League All-Star pitcher Ron Davis.
The clinic ends with a one-inning game between players.
A pizza party and a photo and autograph session with the players will follow on the Upper Field of Posse Grounds Park at 525 Posse Ground Road.
