Sedona may not offer a fireworks display — or allow ones for personal use — but for those looking to do something during the day on July 4, Sedona Parks and Recreation may have what you’re looking for.
This year it will be offering two separate events — the laser show at the Sedona Performing Arts Center for the second year and Wet Fest, a first-year event.
Parks and Recreation Manager Rachel Murdoch said the laser show is coming along nicely and that her department has had more of a say into its production than they did last year.
“We spent this last year editing it to exactly what we want to see,” she said. “It’s going to be even better than last year. It’s now going to be 25 minutes long and we’ll have four showings instead of three.”
Those showing will take place at noon, 1, 2 and 3 p.m.
Activities on July 4 have been a variety of iterations over the last several years from outdoor laser shows to mid-day concerts. Since Sedona does not allow fireworks, Murdoch said they don’t try and compete by offering nighttime events.
“We’re trying to find a good fit for what works in the daytime for both locals and visitors,” she said. “We’re hoping we’ve found that fit this year.”
Enter Wet Fest. Last year’s event offered water slides on the high school football field. This year, everything has been moved to the public pool at Posse Grounds Park. Parks and Rec has rented larger slides and rides in addition to free swimming at the pool. This will run from 1 to 4 p.m.
A DJ will be on hand to play music and lunch will be available for sale. In addition, at 1 p.m. there will be a watermelon-eating contest followed at 2 p.m. with a hot dog eating contest sponsored by Senor Bob’s. Contestants in both will compete for bragging rights and cash prizes. Those interested in competing must sign up ahead of time. The hotdog contest is limited to the first 15 who sign up at Senor Bob’s at 2015 W. SR 89A. Patriot Disposal is the main sponsor this year for the Wet Fest.
Murdoch asked that those coming from Wet Fest dry off completely before going to the laser show. And in regard to the laser show, she said this will be the last year Diamond Resorts will be the main sponsor of the
July 4 festivities. She asked that any business or individual looking to partner with the city [the laser shows costs $26,000] for next year’s event to contact her. If not, this will be the last year for the laser show.
“We’re really hoping someone steps up to help sponsor the laser show because it’s proving to be a really great event,” she said.
