Doug Barnard, pitcher for the Dirty Rats, hurls a pitch at Posse Grounds Park during the team’s Sedona Adult Softball League doubleheader Thursday, Aug. 18. By forfeit and by an 8-4 win over the Sedona Red Rock News, the Dirty Rats swept the doubleheader, pulling into a tie for third place.

Miss the Sedona Adult Softball League? You weren’t alone.

Following two straight weeks of rain-outs Thursday, Aug. 18, two of the league’s nine teams didn’t show up, and a third had canceled the rest of its season.

Those left standing include Red Rocks Rotary, which continued its surge Aug. 18 to the top seed of the league playoffs, scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1.

After downing the Mighty Ducks of L’Auberge de Sedona, 9-6, Rotary will be assured of no worse than a tie for first place in the league if it can win a Thursday, Aug. 25, showdown with the Balloonatics to end the regular season.

Close behind are the Dirty Rats, which moved into a tie with A Day in the West for third after a four-run fourth inning downed the Sedona Red Rock News, 8-4, to sweep their doubleheader.

“We gave Dirty Rats a good game to start the doubleheader, and that carried over to the second game against The Other Team,” said Ron Eland, Sedona Red Rock News head coach, after rebounding for a 5-1 win. “I’m not sure if you can have a friendly arch-nemesis, but if you can, ours has been The Other Team. So it was nice to get that monkey off our backs.”

Shortstop Zeke Saxman and left fielder Dylan McNeill powered the Paperboys offense to the first win over The Other Team in the team’s two seasons of existence.

“The Other Team has some good hitters, so to hold them to just one run is something we were all very proud of,” Eland said.
