Red Rock soccer hits the road1 min read

The Sedona Red Rock High School soccer teams played away from home at the end of last week.

The girls team fell 3-0 at Scottsdale Christian Academy on Dec. 8 while the boys team went 2-2 at the Coyote Soccer Classic.

Down 1-0 at halftime, the Scorpions girls team saw three clear chances to score in the second half, but failed to convert any. The Eagles tacked on two more en route to the final score. Eagle senior Kate Lawrence scored two, bringing her season total to 11 in five games.

Scorpions head coach Juan Carlos Aguilar said his team was held to mainly playing defense throughout the entire game, adding that the host Eagles were much bigger and more experienced than his young Scorpions squad.

Despite the loss, Aguilar was happy with his defense. “The defensive line and midfield had a great game,” he said. “The way they [Scottsdale] attacked was organized and very good; we defended really well.”

At the Coyote Soccer Classic, held Dec. 9 and 10 at Arizona Lutheran Academy in Phoenix, the boys team split its four matches.

On Friday the Scorpions opened with a 1-0 loss to Bourgade Catholic before rebounding with a 2-0 win over North Pointe Prep.

On Saturday, they lost 2-0 to Valley Christian, then beat Glendale Prep 3-1.

“We went into the tournament trying to practice our game in game situations and learn as much as possible,” first year head coach Johan Lagercrantz said. “We didn’t score on the opportunities we created. We have problems putting the ball on frame.”
